Nyerere National Park, formerly the Selous Game Reserve, is Africa's largest national park, spanning over 30,000 square kilometres of pristine miombo woodland, floodplain, and riverine forest in southeastern Tanzania. Its lifeblood is the mighty Rufiji River, a network of channels, oxbow lakes, and sandbanks that draw wildlife from across the park during the dry season, creating some of the most concentrated game-viewing in all of Africa. Nyerere is one of Tanzania's best places to see the endangered African wild dog, and its lion population is among the largest on the continent. Unlike the northern circuit parks, Nyerere offers a genuinely diverse range of safari experiences including classic game drives, Rufiji River boat safaris, walking safaris, and fly-camping under the stars. Far less visited than the Serengeti or Ngorongoro, a safari here feels remote, exclusive, and deeply immersive.

Udzungwa Mountains National Park is unlike any other park in Tanzania, a place where game drives give way to hiking trails and the wildlife is measured not in lions and elephants but in rare primates, endemic birds, and plants found nowhere else on earth. Part of the ancient Eastern Arc Mountains, often called the Galapagos of Africa for their extraordinary levels of endemism, the Udzungwas protect dense montane rainforest rising from 250 metres to nearly 2,600 metres above sea level. The park is home to the Iringa red colobus and the Sanje crested mangabey, two primate species unique to this small patch of forest. Over 400 bird species have been recorded here, including several discovered by scientists only in recent decades. The park's signature experience is the hike to Sanje Waterfalls, a dramatic 170-metre cascade plunging through the forest. Udzungwa pairs naturally with a Mikumi safari, offering a complete southern circuit experience that combines classic savanna game drives with genuine rainforest adventure.
