Lying just off Tanzania's eastern coast, the Zanzibar Archipelago is one of the Indian Ocean's most captivating destinations. The Moroccan explorer Ibn Battuta visited in 1331 and ranked it among the most beautiful cities in the world. Its UNESCO-listed ruins, including the Great Mosque, once the largest in sub-Saharan Africa, and the Palace of Husuni Kubwa, remain remarkable for their scale, ambition, and setting beside the Indian Ocean. Reached by a short boat crossing from Kilwa Masoko, a visit here feels like stepping into a chapter of history that most of the world has yet to discover.
